Yarn and more yarn

The story doesn't start there.  It starts in the chest where I keep our placemats and table cloths.  I don't know about your house, but we -- for some reason -- have stacks of placemats.  I asked the family and they declined, so I phoned our local humane society.  No, they wouldn't like them for the cats to sleep on, but they would sell them!!  Not my thought.  So I phoned my veterinary office and they are delighted to take them off my hands.

Then my head started to swirl.  I was generously given yarn that isn't the best but you could work with it.  Not for hats or scarfs but certainly a comfy mat for a cat to nap on.   This is the first one.  Two shades of blue yarn, knitted on 8mm circular needle.

My friend Tasha knits a lot and always knits on circular needles because...........are you ready...........you can shove the knitting onto the cable and lay the needles over each other and the work will stay in place.  No coming off the ends.  Works for us.  Thanks Tasha

The next mat is colourful!!  I used up what I had -- thinking I had plenty of red -- but cats don't care.  They just love comfy.  I know I own two of them.  They love quilts, they love blankets, they love pillows, they love your legs.
These are very easy to knit.  All you do is knit and knit and knit some more.
These are like the dishcloths.  I highly recommend a blend of yarns for these.  They will be washed often and thrown in a dryer, so wool is definitely out.  Cotton can shrink too, so watch the yarn you buy.
To knit it up:
Cast on 4 stitches
Knit one row
Row 2:  K1, increase 1 stitch in the next stitch, K2, increase 1 stitch in the next stitch, K1
Row 3:  Knit
Row 4:  K1, increase 1 stitch in the next stitch, Knit to the last two stitches and increase on stitch, K1
Row 5:  Knit
Repeat rows 4 and 5 until you have 65 stitches on the needle
Knit 2 rows
and now you decrease
K1 stitch, K2 tog., knit to last three stitches, K2 stog, K1
Knit 1 row.
Repeat until you have 4 stitches left on the needle.  Cast off.  Sew in any ends you may have.  Easy peasy.
It takes me two nights to do this.  I go up one night and
                                                                                         d
                                                                                           o
                                                                                             w
                                                                                               n
                                                                                                  the next.
I think the next time I make these I'm going to try a baby blanket yarn which is thicker.  I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
This is where the orginal pattern came from.  I adapted mine for this purpose.

I'll try to post next Thursday instead of Friday.  I'm working on things at the moment so I should be good for it.  I don't like posting on holidays.
