A lot of organizations that people have donated to in the past are -- shall we say -- getting a bit particular about what they want. Some are asking for for double and queen size quilts!! Gone are the days some places are happy with a lap size quilt.
I just finished this pattern in a double size for a customer and I made a double -- 80" x 80". I did this on EQ and made it 81 x 99". It could have been wider, it could have been longer but when you start purchasing, for me, this is more than big enough
There are 4 fabrics in this quilt. I roughly calculated the fabric to cost about $18.00m for all of them. Grand total for the front and back is roughly $280, then we add the tax. Whether you will get the binding out of the front fabrics, I don't know, I didn't calculate that
Then you need batting. I found a queen size 80/20 bat for $36.00 plus the tax. Then you may need a new cone of thread. Locally that is about $18.00.
Wow this is adding up, isn't it? We are now more than $334. Add in your time because quilts are not made in a day. I hand bind and it takes me two days to bind a double size quilt. Geez, I knit faster!
The next time someone asks you to make a quilt for them and they gasp at the price show them the amount of money you are putting up front, explain the amount of time involved. If they don't get it, walk away and tell them to learn our craft but they won't be starting at our level.
